You have certainly heard of WordPress! But do you know what it is?
WordPress is a CMS Acronym for Content Management System. To simply translate this acronym, we say that it is a web design and content management tool.
When we talk about content, it includes texts, images, videos, music, documents in different formats and forms, in short, all types of content that we will be able to put in a web page. You should also know that there are other CMS.
What is the difference with an HTML website?
A static site is a page in HTML format, i.e. a page that corresponds to a file.
If you have 15 pages in HTML format, you will have 15 files.
In the world of CMS and, in our case, the WordPress CMS, the goal is to create a dynamic site where we have a theme also called template or gabarit. Let’s consider this theme as a single page in which there is going to be a dynamic loading of content.
How does it work?
First of all, to make your site work, you need a host that we’re going to associate with a language called PHP and a database that runs on MySQL.
But I’m not going to go into the details.
What is the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org?
WordPress.com is a platform that offers hosting and a turnkey tool that allows you to easily populate your site without having to install WordPress.
Two offerings are available:
- The free but quickly limited offer
- The paid offers (Personal, Business and Premium)
Depending on the package you choose, this can get relatively expensive when you do the math at the end of the year.
WordPress.org is a site where you can download the CMS for free. Once the file is downloaded, it can be used on an unlimited number of sites!
To make it work you will still have to put some money into buying a domain name and hosting. That is to say on average about 75€ per year if, like us, you go through the solution that 02switch offers for example.
The only downside is that unlike WordPress.com which handles maintenance, it will be up to you to take care of it or have it outsourced at your expense.
In either case we’ll go for an online design.
What is an Online Design?
We can design a website in two ways:
Online, directly on your domain name via your web host. It is best in this case to use an extension or lock access so that no one can access the site while it is being built…
Locally on your computer so you can take the time to properly develop your site without needing to depend on an internet connection. Once the work is done, you will need to transfer your work locally via FTP to a hosting company so that your site can be seen on the web.
To install your site locally, we recommend using Local by FlyWheel read this article for know more about.
Local is software that makes it easy to create your site on your computer’s hard drive.
Now that you know a little more, here’s an additional tip.
Be aware that many providers such as 02switch offer 1-click installation. If you follow the steps well, it becomes a breeze to install it on his host.
If the 1-click installation scares you, I’ll take care of the necessary for the creation of your site and, icing on the cake, with me it’s free!
